I'm sure you'll agree that fictional characters’ personalities can seem fascinating. One of my favorite characters is Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. Actor Johnny Depp portrays the character beautifully and stays true to his personality type.

When I see the way fictional characters display their given personality traits throughout their lifespan on the big screen, I realize this is a work of genius on the part of their creators. Having some experience in acting, I’m in awe of my fellow actors, who can pull off the most complex of characters and make them seem as authentic as the people we interact with in real life each day.

The characters that intrigue me most are those with an INFP personality type, according to the Myers-Briggs Personality assessment. Myers-Briggs is a test based on Carl Jung's theory of personality types. It was developed by a mother-daughter team, Katherine Briggs and Isabel Myers, to identify a person's strengths, preferences, and personality types.

The test is used as a tool that helps you pinpoint what personality you have and understand why you feel the way you do.

When you take the test, you’ll find out how your personality fits into four different areas, just as the traits fit into fictional characters INFP types. Here are the four different areas used to determine personality types:

  • Introverted or Extroverted
  • Intuitive or Sensing
  • Feeling or Thinking
  • Perceiving or Judging

In this post, I'll show you the traits of an INFP personality, plus share some examples you'll find on the TV and the big screen displaying their INFP characteristics.

What is an INFP Personality Type?

If you’re wondering what INFP typology means, let’s take a look:

I= Introverted

N= Intuitive

F= Feeling

P= Perceiving

If you meet someone with an INFP personality, you’ll notice they generally try to do the right thing, seek out truth and knowledge, and are intuitive. They are most content when their life lines up with their inner core values. If you have INFP friends, you’ll most likely notice they seem to have some insight into what you feel is important in your life.

Careers that INFP personality types may find enjoyable include those that allow them to help others develop and learn, which makes them good counselors. They’re creative and may enjoy delving into the arts or writing.

Above all, whatever kind of work they do, to be satisfied, they must find it to be meaningful. Their perfect job situation is one where they can work with like-minded people.

A few real-life examples of people commonly associated with INFP personalities include:

  • William Shakespeare, playwright
  • J.R.R. Tolkien, author of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy
  • Audrey Hepburn, actress and humanitarian
  • Johnny Depp, actor.
  • Kurt Cobain, musician with Nirvana

In addition to real-life people embodying the INFP personality type, there’s a host of characters in the vast realm of fiction that exhibit the same qualities.

Today we’ll take a look at 31 such characters that have captured my imagination and, I’m sure, will inspire you with their unique INFP perspectives.
