Many of us know how it feels to muster up the nerves to ask our crush out on a date or be flattered by someone who has feelings for us and wants to get to know us better.  But, somehow, we pushed past the nerves and threw ourselves into the relationship headfirst.

Next thing we know, we discovered that we had strong feelings for this person and began thinking about how our life would be with them long term. However, over time, things began to change and unfortunately one day, the relationship came to a painful end

It may have been because of infidelity, huge disagreements, financial issues, differences in priorities, lying, possessiveness, lack of respect, intimacy issues, or poor communication.   Or something else?

Whatever the reason for the breakup, it helps to have someone in your life to encourage you, give you a safe space to heal, and give you the confidence to get back on the saddle again (date again) when the time is right.

Why Say Words of Encouragement?

Words of encouragement are a lifeline to a person who is hurting by motivating them not to give up.  According to research, breakups among young people are the leading cause of psychological distress and a significant reason they commit suicide.  In fact, breakups are said to be the number one cause of suicide among our younger population.

Being able to uplift a loved one, help them change their perspective, or even encourage them to get psychological help are great ways to do our part in helping someone heal after a painful breakup.  Words of encouragement also bring comfort, like a breeze in the shade on a hot sunny day.   They will boost a person's morale and affirm things they already know within themselves.  Even if it is hard for them to see at the moment.

For example, I didn’t date until I was 18.  My first real relationship was with someone who was about ten years older.  The two of us hit it off at first and had a lot of fun making great memories together.  However, my ex abruptly broke things off.

It was said that we were at different points in our lives, and after a few months, it was evident that we had mismatched priorities.  I chose to try anything I could to make the relationship work.  But it was over, and my heart was broken.  I fell hard and quickly into the relationship because it was my first.

So, I played every scenario in my mind of ways the two of us could get back together.  But dwelling on the pain of the breakup only added to it.  I began to fear I would never have a relationship again and didn’t trust that I wouldn’t be heartbroken again.   It wasn’t until my mom encouraged me by saying, “I know you are hurting.  But what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.  Things will get better.”

The more I meditated on my mom’s comforting words, the more I began to see the light at the end of a dark, painful tunnel, believing that I could move on from this situation.  As a result, I entered into relationships differently and handled breakups a lot better in the future.

Lastly, it would help if you said words of encouragement because breakups aren't always easy to navigate alone, whether it was a 4-month relationship or a 20-year marriage.

Final Thoughts on Words of Encouragement After a Breakup

As the Neil Sedaka song says, “Breaking up is hard to do!”  When we go through breakups, we experience a plethora of emotions that cause us to either reach back for what was, feel stagnant in what is or be afraid to take steps forward into the future.

So, like a tool in a toolbox, words of encouragement after a breakup becomes the thing that helps us break free from the chains of yesterday. They pull out the nails of heartbreak that are holding us down today, and are the sledgehammer that breaks downs the walls that block our view of a bright future.

Sometimes our friends or family members can see the best in us, even when we can't see it for ourselves.  This happens because our view was clouded by the unfortunate circumstance of a painful breakup.

Lastly, remember a song from the movie Annie that says, “The sun will come out tomorrow.  So, you gotta hang on ‘til tomorrow.  Come what may.  Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love you, tomorrow.  You're always a day away!”   You may be struggling and feeling emotional today, but tomorrow is a new day filled with new possibilities.
