One of the most fascinating things to consider in life is how the God of the universe created each of us in a very unique way. For example, no two fingerprints are identical, our DNAs differ, and dental records vary.
Similarly, God created each of us with different personality types, gifts, and abilities. All to fulfill our very different and unique life purposes.
However, it is vital to our life’s mission that we be able to know our identity. Furthermore, we recognize the things God has given us a passion for and pursue him through prayer to fully understand what we were created to do.
Finding Our Identities in Scripture
The Bible is the “Inspired word of God” ( 2nd Timothy 3:16), and in it is found many bible verses about identity. In studying it we can understand ourselves better. It helps us to view our identity the way God himself sees us.
Moreover, it is His love letter to each of us and a guide to help us find our life's purpose and pursue it.
When doing this, we no longer look at ourselves according to the world's standards. For instance, the world has ever-changing standards on beauty, especially from an external standpoint. In society, we place great value on a person's exterior features, body shape, clothing, and jewelry.
However, scripture tells us in 1st Peter 3:3-4, “What matters is not your outer appearance—the styling of your hair, the jewelry you wear, the cut of your clothes—but your inner disposition. Cultivate inner beauty, the gentle, gracious kind that God delights in.”
Therefore, holy scripture helps us see that our identities are found in Christ, who laid down his life for us, giving us the liberty to flourish in the uniqueness God created us in. Therefore, we are to celebrate our differences and realize that we can all come together to leave a lasting imprint on the world.
Finding our identity will help us know how to walk in confidence that there is nothing we cannot accomplish. It will give you a boldness to take on the world head-on.
Many in society focus on our flaws and the imperfections of others (usually as a way to make them feel better about themselves). However, through scripture, we find that our flaws and imperfections make us who we are.
But at the same time, bible verses encourage us to be better people and the best version of ourselves. Therefore, reaching our God-given potential.
A great deal of our frustration in life is associated with not correctly comprehending our God-given identities, causing a lot of insecurities.
Stephen A. Pegues, author of the book “I See It, Even When I Don't See It Yet!” talked about having a revelation of our identities. In the final chapter, he stated that a true revelation of our identity would give us a more extraordinary outlook on many of life's circumstances.
We no longer see them as problems that hold us back but as opportunities to make a difference and carve our niche in society. Moreover, we can look at ourselves more glowingly and be comfortable in our own skin as we fulfill our purpose.
Lastly, knowing our identity should honor God and bless others. We are all blessed with some good values, personality traits, and good works, but they are not for our benefit. For instance, look at fruit-bearing trees in nature. An apple tree doesn’t eat its own apples or a pear tree its own pears, etc.
Instead, the fruit the tree produces is for others to come and be blessed by partaking in the fruit. Like trees, the fruit produced in our lives, though they can be a heavy burden to bear (like a tree limb holding dozens of apples), are to serve the needs of others.
